Alex Belanger is the Executive Director of Facilities Management, Planning, Maintenance and Operations at Fresno Unified School District, which is the third-largest school district in California with an enrollment of 74,000 students. FUSD is comprised of 3,862 classrooms at 99 schools with an additional 12 non-instructional sites and over 8 million square feet on nearly 1,300 acres.

Alex has over 28 years of experience in facility management, general contracting of major public/private projects, public/commercial maintenance and operations services, construction management, and public/private design/sustainability program management. He has successfully managed and recovered projects for the Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, healthcare, hospitality, K-12 education, community colleges, and universities.

As a private consultant, Alex managed projects/programs in the Arctic Circle for NANA Regional Corporation, the NMS Facilities Management Department (one of the largest privately held M&O companies in Alaska a NANA/Sodexo partnership), and Pedro Bay Village Corporation, establishing and developing opportunities for community economic development for Alaska’s indigenous population.

Alex’s unique background is further diversified with his experience in developing and managing projects & programs from the oilfield & mining industries on the North Slope of Alaska in sensitive tundra wetlands to destination resorts in the South Pacific and Central America. Prior to being recruited to Fresno Unified School District, Alex was hired as Assistant Director of Maintenance and Operations as a recovery specialist to address and improve maintenance and operations related to safety, productivity, and quality control at Anchorage School District.

Alex is a licensed general contractor in the State of Alaska, holds a PM Certification from Parsons Brinckerhoff/Harvard online, qualified at a GS-11 Principal Supervising Construction Coordinator for Department of Defense, and is a journeyman carpenter. Alex serves on the West Fresno Steering Committee, the Fresno City Parks & Trails Revitalization Committee, is a board member on West Fresno Community Economic Development Corporation, serves on the Central Unified School District Bond Oversight Committee, and also serves on the City of Fresno Capitol Projects Oversight Board.

Alex is a member of CMAA Construction Manager Association of America. He was most recently named the ACSA Classified Leader of the Year Region IX and was part of a team that received the AIA Design Award of Merit for Philip J. Patiño School of Entrepreneurship. While working at FUSD, Alex supported the Council of Great City Schools in facility assessments and recommendations for the Puerto Rico Public Schools Facility Assessment regarding the reopening schools after the Hurricane Maria, as well as Buffalo Public Schools and Broward County Public Schools. He also supports the CGCS annual conference and subcommittees related to operational services best practices.
